One of the things that I have a habit of doing when I’m in my car is frequently looking in my rear view mirror. I love to look at the cars, the people and all of the scenery that’s behind me. Well, the other day I was looking back for such a long period of time that I started daydreaming. I stared so long that I didn’t realize that the traffic light in front of me had turned green signaling me to go. As a result, the gentleman in the car behind me gave me a long honk on his horn. He threw both of his hands up in the air and said what I strongly believe were a few encouraging words. I don’t know what he said but I can imagine that one of the words he screamed at me was MOVE!
I do believe that you can learn a lot by looking at your past. You’ve heard the saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.” However, that’s only part of the story because there’s a major difference between remembering your past and rehearsing your past. If you keep rehearsing your past you will never be prepared to play a different role. Paul tells us in Philippians 3:13 to forget those things which are behind and reach forward to those things which are ahead. You have a great future ahead of you but in order to experience all that God has for you, you cannot continue to stay stuck staring at what’s behind you.
Who or what in your past is holding your attention? What do you think God has for you in the future that you need to put your focus on? Know that your past is not your future and your future doesn’t have to be your past! It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, how long you done it or who you done it with. Your best days are ahead of you and not behind you! You will not be able to fully embrace your destiny if you’re not able to fully let go of your history. Get your eyes out of that rear view mirror and look at the huge, beautiful and exciting view that’s in front of you. So, when your light in life turns green, you can be ready to MOVE!
