When I was in high school, we wore uniforms to school but occasionally we would have dress down day where we could wear our regular clothes but your clothes had to be the school’s colors. I asked my mom if she could bring me to the mall to get me a yellow Polo shirt and blue Girbaud jeans. She said, “Yes, I can bring you….WHEN I GET OFF FROM WORK.” I said, “Ok.” But in the back of my mind I’m thinking, she gets off at 5:00!! That’s a long time for me to wait! So, I made a decision to go to the mall with my friends before my mom came home from work and purchase the clothes that I wanted myself. When I told my mom what I did, she was very disappointed in me. She said, “Have I ever told you I would do something for you and didn’t do it?” I said, “No.” She said, “So, I don’t understand! What was the problem?” I said, “The problem momma is that I didn’t want to wait!”
Waiting is a necessary requirement for the believer. It takes patience. It takes discipline but most importantly it takes trust. When God promises us something, we have to be patient and wait on His timing. We have to discipline ourselves to not move before Him and do things on our own. But most importantly, we have to have trust that He will fulfill every promise He has made to us. Numbers 23:19 tells us that God is not a man, that He should lie. His track record proves His faithfulness towards us. But what record are we proving to Him when He asks us to wait?
I have to tell you that my mom made me wear my uniform to school the next day. How embarrassing! But her message to me was clear and it was simply, TRUST ME! By me moving prematurely, I received less than she would’ve given me and I didn’t get to enjoy what I rushed to have. Trust God’s timing. It’s better to wait a while and have things fall into place than to rush and have things fall apart.
