I have the awesome privilege of being one of the Sunday school teachers to a group of Bible scholars between the ages of 3-5. Every Sunday, as a reward and often as an incentive for listening to the Bible story, we hand out snacks to the kids. All of the kids know that at the end of our class, they are getting snacks! If you ask them what it is that they love most about Sunday school, I have no doubt that their answer would definitely be snacks:) Well, this particular Sunday, I handed a little boy his snack. He grabbed on to it fast and quickly proceeded to walk back to his seat. Before he could get too far, I stopped him and said, “What do you say?” He looked at me with the cutest but confused look. He didn’t say a word. I said, “thank you.” He said, “You’re welcome” and walked away.
Too often we, as God’s children, underestimate the power of these two small words. Because we serve a God who is caring, gracious, loving, patient and giving in nature, we approach Him with expectancy. Expecting Him to give certain things to us because that’s just what He does. He gives and we know it! Yet, instead of telling Him thank you, we often times respond just like this little boy did with “you’re welcome” as if we’re doing Him a favor.
Let us not get so caught up in receiving from Him that we forget to give thanks to Him. Because as my grandmother used to say, “He didn’t have to do it, but He did.”
