It’s 2:30 am and I am wide awake! Not only am I wide awake but I’m also hungry. I walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge and staring at me were some beautiful looking strawberries! I got a plate and sat the container on the counter. I took some strawberries off of the top and I rinsed them off. It was about to go down in the kitchen! I went back to get some more (don’t judge me) and when I reached down in the container, I was shocked! The strawberries on the outside looked great but underneath the surface, the other strawberries were molded.
We live in a society today where how people see us matters tremendously. We are often judged by how we look so we put a lot of time and effort into our appearance so that we are viewed as beautiful and well put together. However, God is not persuaded by how great we look on the outside, but He’s more interested in the beauty that’s underneath our surface. 1 Samuel 16:7 tells us “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” There is nothing wrong with wearing nice clothes, driving a nice car or living in a gorgeous home for it is God who provides us with these nice things. However, these things may impress others and draw them close to you, but the things alone won’t draw you close to God. For to Him, the most attractive part on you, is in you, and that’s your heart. Never be more concerned with outwardly pleasing people than you are with inwardly pleasing God.
