My coworker has a beautiful plant on her desk. I always admire how great it looks. However, Monday when we came to work, all of the leaves on the plant were down as if something had fallen on it. She walked toward a group of ladies standing in the hallway looking at it and said, “I know. I keep forgetting to water it. I’ll have to remember to write myself a note.” Another coworker said, “I hate to tell you this but watering it alone won’t revive it. I looked at it and your plant doesn’t have any roots. Unless you repot it, it won’t grow.”
As a plant’s roots sink deep into the soil it needs for nourishment and stability, so too should our roots of faith sink deep into the word of God that we also need for nourishment and stability which only comes from having a personal relationship with God. Attending church alone or popping in to Bible study every other week won’t promote growth because that’s just watering our relationship. We need something more sustaining if we want to remain rooted in Him. Colossians 2:6-7 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
When you live in Christ and have a personal relationship with Him, you develop life-giving soil, a solid foundation and you always grow! You’re not easily withered because you are rooted in Him! So, don’t just water your relationship, examine your roots and if necessary repot it, so that there can be evidence of growth in your life! That is the only way you will be faithful, fruitful and flowing if you remain “rooted” in Christ!
